It’s a milestone moment in the highly anticipated new era of supersonic travel. Now, 10 years after the Boom Supersonic project began in 2014, CEO Blake Scholl tells CNN Travel over video call, there are an exciting few months ahead. “The advent of digital engineering is a huge enabler for why supersonic flight’s coming back,” explains Scholl. Courtesy Boom Supersonic‘If we have faster airplanes, we don’t need as many’He also argues the case for other efficiencies offered by faster flight. Scholl says, “2024 is going to be one of the biggest years yet for supersonic flight.

CNN —Ford says it has a top-secret, high-powered team working to design its future electric vehicles. Electric vehicle sales increased by 40% in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, according to Cox Automotive. In a study released late last year by S&P Global Mobility, almost half of people surveyed globally thought EV prices were too high. “We developed a super-talented ‘Skunk Works’ team to create a low-cost EV platform,” Farley said. By dubbing its own operation as a “Skunk Works” team, Ford is seeking to put the scale of the matter front-and-center.

President Joe Biden asked Congress in July to approve another $24 billion related to Ukraine, which Ukraine supporters - Republicans as well as Democrats - had hoped could become law as part of a spending bill. A U.S. official said that, as of Monday, the Defense Department had $1.6 billion left to replace weapons sent to Ukraine, no funds left under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and $5.4 billion worth of Presidential Drawdown Authority. But he, and some other Republicans in both the House and Senate, refused to include more aid for Ukraine in the measure. "Today, DoD has exhausted nearly all available security assistance funding for Ukraine," McCord wrote in the letter, dated Sept. 29 and expressing concern that the stopgap spending bill did not include security assistance for Ukraine. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Kyiv was in talks with Republicans and Democrats in Congress, and that the drama around the stopgap bill was an "incident" rather than something systemic.

Washington has sent the Kyiv government $113 billion in security, economic and humanitarian aid since Russia invaded in February 2022. A U.S. official said that, as of Monday, the Defense Department had $1.6 billion left to replace weapons sent to Ukraine, no funds left under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and $5.4 billion worth of Presidential Drawdown Authority. But he, and some other Republicans in both the House and Senate, refused to include more aid for Ukraine in the measure. We'll have another package of aid soon to signal our support for the brave people of Ukraine," Jean-Pierre said. "Today, DoD has exhausted nearly all available security assistance funding for Ukraine," McCord wrote in the letter, dated Sept. 29 and expressing concern that the stopgap spending bill did not include security assistance for Ukraine.

The sample capsule will parachute into the Utah desert as its mothership, the Osiris-Rex spacecraft, zooms off for an encounter with another asteroid. The asteroid samples will be handled inside nitrogen-purging gloveboxes by staff in head-to-toe clean room suits. ASTEROID AUTUMNThis fall is what NASA is calling Asteroid Autumn, with three asteroid missions marking major milestones. Both the NASA spacecraft and its target — a metal asteroid — are named Psyche. Japan’s first asteroid sample mission returned microscopic grains from asteroid Itokawa in 2010.

Lockheed Martin, but Make It Fashion

Major defense contractors like Raytheon, Boeing and Northrop-Grumman have produced baseball hats, T-shirts and water bottles advertising military-grade weapons like ballistic missiles, rocket-propelled grenades and fighter jets. Now, Lockheed Martin, the American defense contractor best known as the world’s largest weapons manufacturer, is allowing its brand to be used in the streetwear business. Through Equity Management Inc, a corporate trademark licensing company in San Diego, Lockheed has been selling its trademark to apparel retailers in both the United States and abroad. A spokesperson for Lockheed Martin confirmed the collaborations were real but declined to comment further. The pieces range from $30 for a T-shirt to $115 for a nylon zip-up jacket, and are aimed at young consumers of South Korea’s growing streetwear market, where oversize cuts and bucket hats reign supreme.

Why Ukraine Hasn’t Been a Boon to U.S. Defense Companies

Despite the importance of Lockheed Martin’s Himars rocket launchers to Ukraine’s defense against Russia, the company expects annual sales to fall. The quantities of arms the U.S. is sending to Ukraine are eye-catching: thousands of artillery shells and missiles, and hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition, just to name a few. The total security assistance package, now worth more than $27 billion, should in theory mean a big payday for major weapons producers. Yet the largest ground war in Europe since World War II isn’t translating into boom times for U.S. defense contractors. Hobbled by supply chain disruptions, a tight labor market and a Pentagon procurement process that can take years, arms makers have been struggling to respond to the soaring demand.
Black Hawk helicopters, made by Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky arm, flying near the U.S. military base in Mosul, Iraq, in a 2006 photo. Lockheed Martin Corp. said it has filed a protest against the Army’s decision to award Textron Inc. with the contract to build a new fleet of helicopters that analysts estimate could be worth up to $80 billion. The Army’s Future Long Range Assault Aircraft program is one of the Pentagon’s top priorities, aiming to replace hundreds or even thousands of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters made by Lockheed’s Sikorsky arm.
CNN —The Artemis I mission — a 25½-day uncrewed test flight around the moon meant to pave the way for future astronaut missions — is coming to an end as NASA’s Orion spacecraft is expected to make an ocean splashdown Sunday. Lockheed is NASA’s primary contractor for the Orion spacecraft. The space agency’s plans are to parlay the Artemis moon missions into a program that will send astronauts to Mars, a journey that will have a much faster and more daring reentry process. The Orion capsule captures a view of the lunar surface, with Earth in the background lit in the shape of a crescent by the sun. Artemis II will aim to send astronauts on a similar trajectory as Artemis I, flying around the moon but not landing on its surface.

CNN —The Artemis I mission — a 25½-day uncrewed test flight around the moon meant to pave the way for future astronaut missions — came to a momentous end as NASA’s Orion spacecraft made a successful ocean splashdown Sunday. That process, much like the rest of the mission, aims to ensure the Orion spacecraft is ready to fly astronauts. Lockheed is NASA’s primary contractor for the Orion spacecraft. The space agency’s plans are to parlay the Artemis moon missions into a program that will send astronauts to Mars, a journey that will have a much faster and more daring reentry process. Lockheed Martin Constrained by Supply Chain

Demand for Lockheed Martin’s F-35 combat jets increased in the wake of Ukraine-driven tensions but it could take years for that interest to turn into orders and sales. Lockheed Martin said it is still grappling with parts and labor shortages, denting its hopes of increased sales next year and taking advantage of rising demand for its military equipment. The world’s largest defense company by revenue said it now expects sales to remain flat next year compared with 2022 as it awaits more deals driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s military expansion.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -A U.S. judge on Monday denied the Justice Department’s bid to stop UnitedHealth Group from buying Change Healthcare, a court filing showed, in a blow to the U.S. administration’s tougher enforcement of antitrust issues. UnitedHealth announced the all-cash deal in January 2021, saying it would help streamline administrative and payment processes. UnitedHealth said it was “pleased with the decision” and looked forward to combining with Change as quickly as possible. The Justice Department had said that UnitedHealth and Change Healthcare offer competing software for processing healthcare claims and together serve 38 of the top-40 health insurers in the country. The Justice Department also lost a bid to win convictions of executives at chicken processing companies that it accused of price-fixing.
